Welcome

Hello! My name is Akil Sharperson. I appreciate you visiting my college fund website. I am currently a senior at Columbia High School in Columbia, SC. I graduate on May 28, 2010. In the fall, I will be a freshman at Boston College in Boston, MA. I plan to major in biology/pre-med. I am also currently on the waiting list for admissions to the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN).

Growing up, I’ve always had an interest in science. I find the human body to be quite extraordinary. Although much is known about the body and how it works, I feel that there are still secrets that the body holds and is waiting for us to discover them. I attended Adventures in Medicine at the University of South Carolina, which is a summer medical program for high school students. While there, I had the opportunity to dissect a human cadaver. I learned a lot about the body and was fascinated by what I saw. I want to be a doctor, but I am not sure which field I would like to study. Currently, I am leaning toward orthopaedic surgery, but I know I have some time to figure it out.

Three words that describe me best are intelligent, passionate, and active.  I feel that in the Boston College community my intelligence could be used to help research things such as cancer treatment and possible cures for diseases, especially with a Boston College education. I am very passionate about anything I am participating in and believe in. With my passionate attitude, I think I can instill a new positive energy in the people I am around and those I come in contact with. Being active allows me to get  a lot of tasks done and I am able to be involved in a lot of events. I feel bringing my active nature to the BC community will better the community because I will work to make it better, for everyone. I will continue to develop all three qualities, positively impacting the BC community, as well as my beloved Columbia High community.

Recent News

I have been pursuing athletics as well as academic interests. In the academic light, I took advantage of several opportunities to explore different fields. I participated in a camp related to the human body at the University of South Carolina. At the camp, we dissected cadavers and learned about the different body sections. I actually performed a brain lobotomy.  I also attended a camp at USC involving mental toughness as it relates to sports and life. We explored different techniques, as well as discussed factors that contributed to someone being confident and under control in any activity.

Athletically, I have been involved in a number of camps for football and basketball. I have also played in various state-wide and national tournaments with my AAU Basketball Team.  I attended the Steve Spurrier Football Camp at the University of South Carolina. I also attended the University of Tennessee Basketball Camp as well as the Duke Basketball Camp for the past several summers. My junior summer at Duke Basketball camp, I played one-on-one with Jason Williams for a pair of shoes he picked from Michael Jordan’s closet. It was an exhilarating moment to actually have the opportunity to play against former Duke standout, Jason Williams, but even more so to bring home Michael Jordan’s basketball shoes after I beat Jason Williams. It is a moment that will be memorialized forever on YouTube. That same summer, I also attended the invitation only Addias Phenom Elite Camp in San Diego, California. Recently, I attended both the Princeton Football camp and the Princeton Basketball camp. This past summer, I attended the invitation only Yale Elite Basketball Camp. Fortunately, I was able to attend these camps and still travel to my AAU basketball tournaments that culminated in the National AAU tournament in Las Vegas Nevada the summer of 2009.

You can also view Akil one-on-one against former Duke standout Jason Williams at Coach K's Duke Basketball Camp the summer of 2008.
